A Whole Lot of Workout Recaps & Summer Food Goals

Hi everyone! I hope your week has gotten off to an awesome start. I was a little MIA this weekend living life so I have a few workout recaps to post.

Marathon training (I should say potential marathon training - I won't fully decide if I'm running the Full until I run 15-18 miles successfully) starts Monday, and I'll be running 5 days a week with one day of cross training, so I experimented with a similar workout schedule last week. My body isn't hating me yet, but I know my legs are looking forward to a rest day tomorrow.

Friday's workout was a short 3 mile run, but it gets hot quickly. It's amazing how hard 3 miles can feel...

On Saturday, I wanted to make sure I completed 6 miles, so I went to the treadmill. I don't care if it's cheating. I played with the incline and speed a little, but my goal was time - 1 happy hour.

Over the weekend, I continued my summer food goal to consume as much local seafood as possible. My family orders food from Shore Fresh Seafood all the time, but I had never eaten there. I'm obviously very late to the game, because it was all awesome.

A couple friends and I also had Hoffman's for the first time this summer. The wait was over 30 minutes, but worth it...

Just B hanging with his two Aunts...

On Sunday, I did a shorter Spin workout followed by some time in the weight room. I'll most likely be keeping my cross training sessions to 45 minutes throughout my training cycle to make sure I'm not pushing too hard. For me personally, cross training = lighter workouts...

Another Blue Apron dinner success...

Have you ever eaten purple mashed potatoes?! They were delicious.

Monday morning's workout was another light 30 minute run. I'm learning that slow and steady makes it to the starting line of a race. Going all out on every workout leads to burnout. This was a light and easy outside run...

And look what arrived! Have I mentioned I love racing? Almost 1 week till my last race of the summer...

How have your workouts been going?

Who's crazy like me and racing in August?

Some Media Free Miles & A Charity Event

Hi everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful week and that you have tons of fun plans this weekend.

This is my first week attempting 6 days of workouts (attempt being the key word - I still have to actually make it through workouts today and tomorrow). The legs are feel okay - a little tight, but nothing a long foam rolling session can't fix. Marathon training starts in almost a week(!), so I'm trying to get my body into move it mode a tad early.

Tuesday was my one rest day of the week, so let's move to Wednesday. 5 early outside miles. Wednesday was a beautiful morning, so these were a tad easier than some of my outside runs lately, but still rough towards the end. That sun is apparently still hot...

Another Blue Apron success! I can't say enough good things about this service (And I'm not compensated for my opinions - I just like it that much). This meal was delicious and it's nice to cook something other than my go-to chicken, baked sweet potato and veggie dinner...

I still need to work on my plate of food picture taking skills...

On Thursday, I went to the gym and ran 4 easy miles. I forgot my headphones, so these turned into media free miles. I haven't ran without music in a long time, so it was a good opportunity to really focus on my form and of course work out life problems in my head...

On Thursday afternoon, the Bestie brought baby B to visit Red Bank for the first time. I think he really likes it here...

And who could blame him?

On Thursday night, I attended a Charity event to support the Covenant House of Asbury Park. The event was great...

And the view was pretty perfect too...

Have a great start to your weekend!

When was the last time you ran "media free" miles?

Do you support any charities? Which ones?

Another Blue Apron Meal & Some R&R

Another small vacation has come to an end. I'd be more sad if I didn't have another mini break next week. I'm just living the dream over here.

Rewind to Sunday. I squeezed in a quick 45 minutes on the Spin bike before I had to run to meet my friend for brunch. 45 minutes is plenty of time to get in a solid workout...

We ate at Toast in Asbury Park. I had never been there before but heard it was excellent. There was a 40 minute wait at 10:30am, so I knew it was going to be good. I ordered a spring scramble wrap, and it didn't disappoint...

It was a hot day, but the beach was perfect. There was a cool breeze coming off the ocean, so I just decided to stay there all afternoon...

And of course, I hung out with my favorite...

I was off on Monday, so my workout started a little later than normal. It was HOT outside, so I didn't even attempt to run outside. The treadmill worked out just fine. Oh and I accidentally hit the stop button again - this time with my phone. Yep. My goal for the day was 4 miles, but I wanted to go 40 minutes. Eh well...

Then I did the things I usually do when I don't have to work. Nails...

And some shopping. PS this bag is much more scandalous than what's actually inside...

I received my second Blue Apron box, and cooked up the Salmon Caesar Salad. I love that I can adjust these recipes to my liking. If you've been reading for a while, you know I'm a big weirdo and don't put dressing on my salad. So I basically made a Salmon salad with lemon juice and a little parmesan cheese. I thought it was delicious.

Do you have a weird food thing? I also don't eat cold cuts with cheese sandwiches - but I eat them both separately. That blows people's minds.

Slowing Down Is The Answer & Summer Cravings Satisfied!

I have to check, but I think I have a very similar title to a post from around a year ago when my runs were suffering from the heat. You think I would learn my lesson, but nope!

I was off on Friday (I'm off Monday too - yay!), so I decided to wake up early (cause that's what normal people do on their days off), and try to beat the heat for 7 miles outside. It was just too nice outside to go on the treadmill.

I ran 5 miles along the paved trails and 2 miles on the dirt trails. This run was tough! - the sun beating down was hot - but I never stopped and finished all 7 miles. Disclaimer: There is NOTHING wrong with taking walking breaks - sometimes it's necessary and even more helpful. I know I get a lot of energy after a walk break and sometimes have a better run. My issue is I start too fast and burn out. I know my body and what I'm capable of, but you do you!

Anywhoo, a couple of these miles were above 10 min miles - I think I lost my GPS signal for a tad in the woods - but slowing down was what I needed to finish strong.

After my run, I went and visited B-man for his 2 month birthday! How is he 2 months already?! He seemed pretty content...

Later in the day, I got my nails done. I'm seriously on a roll with this...

And then ate the best Mexican food I've had in a LONG time. El Meson in Freehold. Go there now.

On Saturday, I went to the gym for a quick 4.2 mile run, and the most annoying treadmill problem in the world happened. You're sprinting to finish your last .30 miles and your stomach hits the emergency button again (this happened a few weeks back too). I guess that means I wasn't going fast enough :)

After my run, I went over to the weights area for a little bit of strength training. I can feel the strength workouts paying off (the weights aren't as difficult to handle), so I'm hoping I can keep this up a few days a week...

I went and visited with some family and friends and made my way to the Patio Bar for Happy Hour. This place is usually packed, but I guess the rain earlier in the day scared people away. I finally had my lobster roll that I've been craving all summer long...

And the view was pretty great too...

Have a great, Sunday, everyone!

How were your runs this weekend?

What's the best thing you ate? Lobster!

Living On The Edge & One Good Thing About Your Workout

It's Friday Eve! I hope you're as excited as I am for the weekend. I have another day off tomorrow - I get a good amount of vacation days and figured I would use them to sit at the beach this year instead of my usual random day in December. I'm sure I'll be complaining come that random day in December when I just need to finish my Christmas shopping, but whatevs.

I switched things up a tad this week - I'm living on the edge over here - and ran on Monday. Mondays are usually my off days, but I was working from home and decided to get in an easy 5 mile run at the gym before work...

After my run, I foam rolled a whole lot and Stella decided she wanted to roll too. Have I mentioned she's a stage 5 clinger?

On Monday night, I grabbed a drink at the Biergarten in Asbury Park. This place is usually packed on the weekends, but since it was Monday at 6pm, there was almost no one there. I need to start going out on Mondays more often...

Tuesday was a rest day, so I was back at it on Wednesday morning. I knew running outside on limited sleep wasn't going to go well, but I did it anyway. The heat/humidity will make me a stronger runner even if I feel like I'm going to die from mile .25 onward. The complete distance was 5 miles, but I stopped my watch when I needed to take a quick walking break after 30 minutes, so 4.76 miles of running it was. The only thing good about this run was that sunrise...

I usually bring my lunch to work, but I've been lazy the past few days, so I grabbed this flatbread sandwich at Pret. It was so good! Avocado and roasted corn - yum! Pret has a lot of somewhat healthy options and the calories are on everything, so you know what you're putting into your body. I always appreciate that...

Enjoy the last couple of days of the work week!

Do you have a favorite healthy fast food place? I get a lot of food from Starbucks when I'm at work.

Name at least one good thing about your workout this week?

Belmar 5 Recap & Lots of Cross Training

Good morning! Nice weekends sure go fast, don't they?

I ran the Belmar 5 on Saturday morning - a 5 mile run around the beach town of Belmar, NJ. I had heard so many good things about this race. My mom even ran it way back before I was born! And it definitely was a great race. I'm not sure if it was the location or the fun people racing along with me (probably a bit of both!), but I enjoyed everything about this race (except the heat) and plan to do it every summer.

My only race day mistake (besides the 3 glasses of wine the night before) was parking very far away from the start. I figured I would get a spot on a side street far enough away that I didn't have to fight with people for parking. It took me a solid 20 minutes to walk to the start, which leads me to believe the distance was over a mile (I didn't check). Walking to the start was fine, but coming back from a hard race was not so great. Lesson learned.

Not a bad view for a race start...

There were 2500 people racing!

It was way too hot to attempt any sort of speed work, so I just ran at 9:15-9:30 paces. I even walked through the last two water stations at miles 3 and 4. If I'm going to end up in the hospital from racing, it will be during a marathon :)

Finished!

After the race, I went and hung out with my favorites. A weekend spent with B is a really great weekend...

On Sunday, I was up way too early for a Sunday (hello, 6:15 am), so I did what any rational person would do and went to the gym. Apparently no one else was up as early...

56 minutes on the Spin bike (my goal is almost always 20 miles, so that's why I alternate between 50 and 57 minutes most weeks), followed by some strength training. My legs were sore after my hard run on Saturday, but Spinning flushed them right out. I'm enjoying cross training more than full recovery days right now...

I went down to the beach for almost all of Sunday afternoon. It's funny, I was never a serious beach person as a kid, but as I got older, I just love it. Maybe because I lived away from it for a period of time, so now I appreciate it more? I could have stayed there forever.

After the beach, I hung out at my parents' pool for a tad and even got in a little swim workout. I forgot how amazing swimming is for your body. There's no impact! My dad snapped this pic of me once I was done swimming laps around the pool. Life is pretty great over here...

TimeHop reminded me of this run a couple of years ago. I actually forgot I was running long runs at a sub 9/minute pace. There's always more to the story though. I was about 30 pounds lighter than I am right now and super unhealthy. It's obviously easier to run faster when you're carrying less weight. I was starting to train for the 2013 Marine Corp Marathon and stopped per my Doctor's advice since I was underweight. So while the goal is definitely to get back to running this pace, I'm doing it the healthy way this time around!

Have a great week, everyone!

How were your runs/races this weekend?

Favorite cross training exercise? I love Spin, but I should start swimming more too.
