I have a very love/hate relationship with the Track. I love that I can tune out the world around me without worrying about cars, hills or animals ready to kill. I don’t love the monotonous circles and never changing scenery. For this reason, I usually can only complete 5-mile runs before wanting to lie facedown in the field end zone. To keep things interesting, I now use the track solely for speed workouts.

I’m still perfecting my weekly running plans, so I don’t have a go-to speed workout that I use. Why I don’t just Google a few is a question I always ask myself half way through my workout. In hindsight, today’s run probably should have been an easy paced 4-5 miles. My legs are still feeling yesterday’s 10 miles, so speed today did not go as well as I had hoped.
I warmed up with a mile. On mile two, I tried running the straight 100 meters a little faster than the curves, but my legs were determined to move slower than my normal speed day pace. On mile three, I sprinted 200 meters/walk 100 meters both at 1-minute paces. My legs seemed to enjoy the sprinting – not sure why that was, but it was working. I decided during the start of mile 4 to run by time instead of mileage and stopped at 40 minutes (4.25 miles total)

Until my legs get a little stronger, I’m going to base every run the day after my long run on time and not miles. It seems more manageable and my legs were more than ready to stop at minute 40. After, I did about 20 minutes of abs/squats.

When I lived in Red Bank, NJ, Trader Joe's was located down the street, and I stopped there 3-4 times a week (the employees knew me by name). In Columbus, the closest TJ’s is about 20 minutes away, so it’s become my Sunday tradition to trek out to Joe's and purchase all the food I will need for the entire week (talk about a challenge!). I have a rule that I must buy one new thing every time I go until I have purchased every item available – I think I'm close to accomplishing this goal. This week’s new purchase is Organic Reduced Guilt White Corn Tortilla Chips…yum.
