Re-Learning To Multitask

I always thought I was the great multi-tasker until I returned to college. Graduate school is no joke, and I only have one class, one day a week. I can't imagine what full time would be like! With my full time job, the 300+ page reading assignments and response/research papers are a lot to handle. But I'm loving every second of it because I'm a big nerd and love school.

The sacrifices are definitely being felt. I go to bed later and wake up earlier. I'm definitely not focusing on workout recoveries as well as I should. I don't regret my decision to train for a few spring races thinking it would speed up winter. But the reality is instead of enjoying every moment of the workout, I'm running around an indoor track four days a week thinking about how I still have 150 pages of my school book to read before tomorrow morning. I know it's worth it for my sanity, but I can't help but wonder what will give first.

One way I've learned to multi-task is by doing some of my readings while I cross train. It's not ideal to read a book when trying to blast through a cardio workout, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Yesterday I ran a mile on the treadmill, then 20 mins on the stairs and 20 minutes on the elliptical…and I finished my assignment (total workout time - 1 hr). Today, I had PT, so I warmed up with 1.5 miles on the treadmill, some more stair work and then died as Justin sent me through three rounds, 25 x each of kettle ball swings => push ups => squats => jumping jacks. He also somewhat taught me the weightlifting "jerk" - you know, this one. I'll be ready for the Olympics in about two years (total workout time - 1 hr, 20 mins)…

The polar vortex has returned to the entire country with the exception of California (which is why I'm moving there one day), so I had to snap a pic of my inappropriate workout attire leaving the gym in -20 degree wind chills…

My pale legs need sunshine

I've been trying to eat as clean as possible lately (with the exception of last night's friend dinner at El Vaquero), so I've been eating lots and lots of veggies. The salad in a box thing at the grocery store is genius. I cooked shrimp, tomatoes, asparagus and brussel sprouts and put everything right on top of the lettuce in the salad box. No dish dinners are winning dinners…

How do you find ways to multitask?

What's the temperature where you are?

Will we ever run outside again?
