Switching Up Rest Days - Should You Do It?

Happy Tuesday, everyone. I took the next three days off of work, so it's Friday for me! I can't wait to sleep until…7am. My body just won't sleep any later. Grown up life is lame.

In other news, when you need to foam roll, you need to foam roll. And when there's no room on the floor because you and your cat are living in a 12 x 12 bedroom, use the bed. It works!

Monday was my last day in the office until the Fall (unless I decide to surprise everyone in a month - I like doing that). I used to make the effort to bring my lunch from home to save money, but since I was only in town for a couple of days, I lived on the edge.

Breakfast - Starbucks plain oatmeal - blueberries, flaxseeds and 1/2 banana brought from home.

Lunch - I swear there are toppings in there somewhere - portobello mushrooms, one egg, cucumber and avocado on mixed lettuce. No dressing.

Snack - Peanut Butter Cookie Luna Bar - I love these bars, but they can be high in sugar, so this is a treat from time to time.

I normally rest on Mondays, but I wanted to go to Soul Cycle one last time before leaving the area. I wore the appropriate attire this time around (i.e no baggy running shorts) and felt so much more comfortable. Try new things, people. It's fun!

Like almost everything in life, I'm finding there is no one model fits all when it comes to rest days. Some folks don't take any (not recommended), for others, every day is a rest day (also not recommended). I remember Trainer Bob from The Biggest Loser wearing a shirt that said "three days on, one day off." I know a runner who takes a rest day every 9 days. And then there are a whole bunch of runners out there who take the same day (or two) every week (most common).

I like having a routine, but life can get in the way. My rest days lately have been Monday and Friday, but once I start running 10 mile runs on Saturdays again, that can easily change to Sundays/Thursdays. I say do what your body feels like doing - just don't rest every day. Your body likes to move!

Back to things no one cares about, but I'm going to show you anyway. I took the train home and arrived to this. Nothing like a nice shower after a tough workout.

Commuting was fun while it lasted...

And guess what, 24 hours later - it's still raining. Happy Summer vacation to me!

Do you buy or pack a lunch everyday?

Are you taking any time off this summer?

Do you stick to a certain rest day or switch it up week to week?
