Tips For Eating Healthy When You're Traveling

August is a big travel month, so I hope you have either gone or are going away to somewhere warm, relaxing and fun! I've written before on how tough it can be to eat healthy while traveling. We've all been there. You get to your layover destination and find the closest thing possible - usually a fast food joint - and inhale that cheese burger and fry only to feel quite blah for the rest of your journey. I don't know about you, but I need to eat every three hours or else I become quite "hangry," so food logistics is something I've mastered to keep me and the guy next to me eating a sandwich happy.

Being the type-A person I am, I prefer to put in a little work beforehand over searching an airport for a healthy food choice or going hungry. The below pic is the food I brought on my drive to Washington D.C for my last Half Marathon. I usually tone it down a little for a flight (no water), but I always pack a grocery bag full of food regardless of how I'm traveling.

My Must Have Travel Foods:

*Apples
*Bars - Quest, Kind, Luna
*Veggies
*Cheerios
*Dark chocolate
*Oatmeal (1/2 cup of regular in a sandwich bag and/or instant packets depending on location)

If you decide to eat a snack handed out by the airline during your flight, I try to choose the healthiest option. The small bags of pretzels are only 45 calories, and I ate the Wheat Thins this past trip. Read labels!

If you travel a lot like I do, you may also know of healthy airport options. Columbus airport has a Starbucks in the terminal I frequent, so I grabbed plain oatmeal from there on Friday morning and added my own blueberries and half a banana I brought from home…

And in Chicago (a common layover spot for me), there's a Greek restaurant where I always get a greek salad with grilled chicken (no dressing) if I'm traveling during the lunch/dinner hours. There's also a spot there that sells plain oatmeal for my morning flights…

Put in a little effort and bring food from home so you always know exactly what you're putting in your body. It saves you money too! If that's not possible, do your research and find healthy spots in the airports you'll be flying through. And then have lots and lots of fun!

Happy Summer Travels!
