Fueling Like An Athlete

I can't believe it's Wednesday again. October is FLYING by. I would be more upset if I didn't love Thanksgiving and Christmas more than life itself. Time can stop on December 25th.

I worked out before sunrise again. Two days in a row, people. This is a big deal.

I had personal training and did not sleep through it today. It's the little wins. I ran for 20 minutes, had a PT session, and then finished with one mile on the elliptical. I have one itty bitty 2 mile run Thursday and then nothing till race day!

My trainer and I talked a lot about nutrition during my session. The gist of our conversation was that I've been consistently working out for almost 3 years, and yet I still don't have as toned a body as I'd like. You'd think after 5 half marathons and day after day of ab work, I'd have an ab. I don't need six - just one would be nice. My trainer told me my problem is that I'm either eating too many or too few calories. It's actually both. I am a counting calorie Queen, so I know that half the days of the week I eat about 1300-1400 calories (not enough to sustain my workouts) and the other days, I eat way more. And not way more of the good stuff. Way more sugar and simple carbs like cheerios and things that don't fill me up.

So that conversation sent me running to Barnes and Noble and buying this book…

If I'm going to keep training (and hopefully competing) like an athlete, I need to start fueling like one. That means eating not only more calories, but more nutritious calories. Complex carbs, healthy fats, protein, repeat. I figured no time was better than taper week to try eating better and adding calories…

Morning snack - apple and 1tbsp of almond butter…

Lunch - tuna on ezekiel bread with cucumber, carrots and hummus…

And I treated my brother to dinner at Bravo. I ordered the grilled salmon…

We went to Barnes and Noble after dinner (to buy my awesome nutrition book) and grabbed some coffee at Starbucks. I noticed these being sold. Too soon?

Do you have any "eat like an athlete" tips?

What's your favorite nut butter? I love them all, but have to give PB the win.
