How To Not Gain Weight This Holiday Season

First off, I have finally started to pack. I figured leaving everything to the week of Thanksgiving wasn't the smartest decision. It's weird and a little surreal that 3 weeks from right now I will be sitting in my new apartment living room...

Last night, my friends and I had taco/game night...

I loved everything about our gathering but it got me thinking about how many calorie heavy festivities were in my future. We're trying to plan a "Friends-giving," and then my aunt wants to give me a goodbye dinner. Also, we have real Thanksgiving and the days that follow where we eat all the leftovers. And that just finishes the month of November. December is a whole other beast.

So here are a couple of ways I will be attempting to avoid the almost unavoidable 5 pound holiday weight gain...

  • Saying no to seconds - I'm going to eat what I want when those special meals arise, but one plate is enough. If I reeeeaaaallllllyyyyy need that extra scoop of stuffing, I will wait 15 minutes and see if my stomach is up for it. Too many times (the last 18 Thanksgivings) I don't wait and then I'm in physical pain. Anyone else??
  • Eating healthy the other 80% of the time - During the week and on days when I'm not hanging out with friends/family, I'm going to try eating as clean a diet as I can manage. Healthy food makes me feel better, and an indulgence should be a once in a while thing.
  • Move Move Move - I'm at a point where I really don't have to think too much about working out. It just happens. But with the holidays, even I have to make sure to find time to squeeze everything in. Make the time for yourself. It will help with the stress that shopping, cooking and family (love you guys!) can bring.

A little motivation also goes a long way. In honor of #throwbackthursday, I did a little instagram transformation post. On the left was Halloween 4 years ago and the right was last Saturday before a run. I'm not sure who thought that was a good Halloween look, but I'm glad I have this picture to look back on to remember how far I've come both with my health and fashion decisions...

New workout gear helps to motivate you too. I had a planned rest day yesterday but walked around the apartment in my new Mizunos to get my feet used to new shoes. They really want to go for a run...

And now I'm watching one of my top 5 favorite movies. I serious cannot get enough Goonie action. I must have seen this movie 1001 times...

What additional tips do you have for not gaining weight this holiday season?

Do you break in shoes before working out in them? I always walk around the house in them for a few days and then run short distances - 3-4 miles a few times before a long run.

Favorite movie? If I have to choose only one (so hard!), it's When Harry Met Sally.
