The End Of A Long Weekend & Lessons Learned From A "Bad" Run

Three day weekends are awesome because you blink and it's Wednesday. The rest of my Memorial Day weekend was wonderful. The weather was so beautiful and I had lots of time to spend with all of my loved ones.

I started Sunday with a Spin workout followed by some time in the weight room. I really enjoyed my Sunday rest days during marathon training, but there's also something really great about having lots of time in the morning to get in a solid workout and not having to rush to work...

After my workout, I went and visited my little man. It was his 1 week birthday! I have a strong feeling life is going to FLY by with this little one around. PS, have you ever seen a cuter baby?

My parents had their own BBQ on Sunday night, so it was more burgers and "salads" (potato, macaroni, mozzarella)...

On Monday morning, I went for a Memorial Day run and had my worst run in weeks. The run itself was actually okay, but it was HOT outside (my body is not used to mid 70 degree weather yet), the sun was shining bright, I ran way too fast and just could never quite find my groove. My 6 mile planned run quickly turned into a 4 mile "I'm going to die if I don't stop!" run. Do what you can...

My "bad" run reminded me of a couple of things...

1. Rest days are IMPORTANT! I hadn't had a rest day since last Wednesday and with the drinking/food/lack of sleep this weekend, my body was probably a tad too tired for this run. I took a nice rest day on Tuesday to make up for it and plan to go easy the rest of the week.

2. Hot weather (and cold weather) changes how fast we run. This article is a good read about pacing when it's hot outside: "slowing down 30 to 90 seconds per mile is common in hot/humid weather." Bottom line: Slow down and run much earlier in the day!

For lunch on Monday, I stuck around a little closer to home and ate at Talulas in Asbury Park. The Cobb salad was so good and just what the doctor ordered after one too many scoops of potato salad all weekend long...

I spent the rest of my Monday doing this and it was pretty awesome...

When was your last bad run?

Best thing you ate this weekend? I'd say the Cobb salad, but I really love BBQ food.
