A Running Funk & Some Race Updates!

Happy Thursday! I'm in a running funk, and I'm not happy about it. I just can't seem to find my groove during my outdoor runs lately. I have some theories as to why this funk exists.

*Weather - it's been hot, and my body is still adjusting to the heat and humidity that came out of no where. Did Spring exist this year?

*Lack of sleep - I was going to bed at 9pm some nights during marathon training. Lately, I'm lucky to get myself to sleep by 12 and then I continuously sleep through my alarm which leads to shorten workouts or additional rest days (this past Tuesday, and last week's three days off).

*No "easy" runs - I'm not really changing up my paces outside. During the winter, I was able to set the treadmill to a comfortable 9:40/mile and just zone out. Lately, I've been running my first mile in the 8:50s and then crashing and burning at the halfway mark. Not smart running on my part.

*No workout variation - Since I consider this time "pre-training" - I'm not training for anything yet, but I need to keep up my running fitness for when training does begin in 6 weeks - I really should be varying my workouts. I haven't stepped on a Stairclimber/elliptical or done a fitness class in a looooong time. I bet my body is yearning to try something else.

*I go through a funk every year - I seem to go through something like this every year. Sometimes it's caused by over training, and other times it's a lack of motivation, but this is not new to me, so I know I'll come out of it. Eventually.

If you're going through some sort of running/fitness slump, don't worry - it happens! We just need to figure out what in our lives need changing and do something about it. Remember, "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

I had a planned rest day on Monday and an unplanned rest day Tuesday (alarm clock issues). On Wednesday, I had an early doctor's appt and decided to run after, but it did not go well. The run was fine, but my body was not reacting well, so I cut it short. Very short. My plan for the day was 7 miles. HA. I will make sure in the future to run before the doctor and not after.

But I can't complain too much when my runs lead me here (yes, that is NJ - I did not run to Ohio ;))...

Race Updates!

I have some fun race updates to announce. I can no longer run the Columbus Marathon due to a family wedding, so I signed up for the Philadelphia Marathon on November 22nd! I'm super excited because it's a tad closer to home in a great city, and it's over a month after Columbus, so I have a little more time before I have to start training. Training begins on August 2nd!

Even though I PR'd my Half during my Full Marathon and, according to my Garmin, broke 2 hours, I have yet to officially PR my Half in a race. I signed up for the Rock n Roll Brooklyn Half Marathon on October 10th where I plan to officially PR and finish in sub 2 hours. Hopefully these new goals get me back to fighting form quickly. It's going to be an awesome Fall!

How's your summer running going?

What fun races are you running this year?
